Welcome to the website of St Mark's players
In January 2012 St Mark's players will stage “Aladdin”, it’s 53rd annual family pantomime at the Stanley Halls in South Norwood, London SE25. The Princess is missing; the Emperor is mad with worry; the Empress is simply mad! Join us as we follow Aladdin and his brothers on a journey of adventure in search of the beautiful princess.
The Princess is in danger and so is the future of the Stanley Halls. St Mark's players have been performing almost continuously at the Stanley Halls since 1959 and we are campaigning, and actively supporting the “Friends of the Stanley Halls” campaign which is proposing an independent or community based board of Trustees who would take over the running of the Stanley Halls and avoid the possibility of it being closed, mothballed or anything worse! When the Stanley Halls were opened in 1903 by the generous patronage of William F. Stanley they were run by a local board of trustees for the first 20 years or more and we, and the campaign, would like to see an independent Board of trustees who would have the enthusiasm to keep this beautiful Victorian building open and used to its fullest extent. The Stanley Halls remains the Victorian centrepiece and diadem in Croydon council's crown of public buildings.
Back to the plot! What you see on the stage is just a small part (albeit the most obvious part) of the team required to put on a performance and St Mark's players would welcome anyone who would like to be part of the backstage/front of house/lighting and sound team. Much of the work involved requires very little experience at a great deal of enthusiasm! If you are looking to be involved in our pantomimes as one of the technical team please speak to one of our stewards or any member of St Mark's players who will point you in the right direction.
St Mark's players will, as it has done in the past few years, be supporting both St Christopher's Hospice in Sydenham and Demelza Hospice in for sick children in Eltham. We will have charity buckets available as you exit the theatre and we would be so grateful for any donations towards these deserving charities. If you would like us to keep in touch with you concerning the future of the Stanley Halls and of our forthcoming productions please let us have your name and address or e-mail address.
May this forthcoming year be filled with joy and good health
Chris Smith-Gillard Chairman and Musical Director
